Was wondering why there are so few online supermarket kinda sites, and so did a search. Found out there are not many online grocery stores in India, but lots abroad. And they all look the same, and all look boring and uninteresting.
So for me atleast, those weekly shopping trips are fun, when going to a supermarket. One of the reasons super markets have taken over from the local kiryana store, atleast for our generation and actually for our upper middle class parents as well is the fact that we can touch and feel stuff in an AC environmet, and frel all hight and mighty. It appeals to our senseof vanity, and laso fills the gap of having nothing to do. In todays modern nuclear, making lots of money when young lifestyle, it helps to getout of ur home!
So then why would online grocery shopping survive?
Well online shopping can save ur time, u can sit at home n order. But do u really with theUI they have as of now.
Look at any online store, it looks the same. A left navigation pain which lists all the categories, a center area which on the first page gives an assortment of products (most selling, new products, offers et al) and on other pages, all the products in that categories.
So what do u do when u have to do ur monthly shopping online, well u go to the site, go to each category, and look for the item u want. One by one, and if u remember what u want, then just search for it, but then i wonder how many would remember the 20 - 30 odd itemsyou buy on a monthly basis.
But instead imagine if u open the site and you see a blank template of the things that most households buy…so you see a scrollable list (with templatised silhouettes) of items that you might want to buy…you see coffee and tea and sugar and salt and detergent and aerated drinks and so on…! the silhouette is of the most popular brand in the category or maybe just a container (anything but a big question mark really) with the category of the product written in bold. And below the silhouette block are just two icons, a checkbox and a down arrow. Click on the down arrow and a window expandS showing all the brands in that category. U select an item, and the silohutte gets filled with that. And for categories that ur not interested in, just delete that category, like baby food for bachelors, not interested, just delete it!
And now imagine that the app remembers what all u chose, n the next time it prepopulates. If u dont like it, u can change with one click, in similar fashion as described above.
And further, what if over a period of time the app tracks ur purchases and knows that u need sugar ever 12 days, and so maybe it just starts reminding you. Or ever further, just orders for u!
This all not only makes the life of the customer easier, it also gives a big oppurtunity to the marketeers. So i usually buy nescafe, but bru is coming up with a new coffee...what does it do, goes to this online store guys and has them suggest bru in the silhotte, or as a suggestion somewhere!
Perfect targetted but still unobstrusive advertisement!
Lots of online stores opening, some one should implement!
